JOIN US ON A SPIRITUAL JOURNEY TO RACIAL UNITY AND RECONCILIATION

Be a part of a historic event for our local faith community as Homewood Church of Christ, in partnership with the Roosevelt City Church of Christ and the Carl Spain Center on Race Studies and Spiritual Action, host the Racial Unity Leadership Summit, September 15-18. This event will bring faith leaders and followers from around the nation to Birmingham to explore how God can lead us to racial unity and healing in a turbulent world.

HISTORICAL FIELD TRIPS

In addition to sessions that will take place at Homewood and at Roosevelt City, optional trips will be offered to sites of significance in the struggle for civil rights and justice in Birmingham and Montgomery.

It is the first time an event like this has taken place among our brothers and sisters here in Birmingham, and

you are invited. 

SPECIAL GUEST

ANTHONY RAY HINTON

An American activist, writer, and author who was wrongly convicted of the 1985 murders of two fast food restaurant managers in Birmingham, Alabama.  Hinton was sentenced to death and held on the state's death row for 28 years, and was later released in 2015.

Wednesday, September 15

  • 1:00PM - Tour of the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute.  Tour should last approximately 2-2.5 hours. Caravan from Homewood Church of Christ will leave at 12:30pm
  • 6:00PM - 9:00PM - Opening Session at Roosevelt City Church of Christ


Thursday, September 16

  • 7:15AM  - Bus tour to the Legacy Museum and Memorial in Montgomery, AL. leaves from Homewood Church of Christ.
  • 2:30PM - Bus Leaves Montgomery, AL.
  • 4:00PM - Bus Arrives at Homewood Church of Christ.
  • 6:00PM - 9:00PM - Evening Session at Roosevelt City Church of Christ

COST AND REGISTRATION


Registration fee for RULS is $50 for the summit alone. The optional side trip to Birmingham civil rights sites on Wednesday, September 15 is $20. The optional Montgomery trip on Thursday, September 16 is $30. For the summit and both trips, the cost is $100.

 


The Wednesday and Thursday evening worship services at Roosevelt City Church of Christ are free and open to the public.

About the Carl Spain Center

The Carl Spain Center on Race Studies and Spiritual Action was founded in 2018 by Dr. Jerry Taylor, Associate Professor of Bible at Abilene Christian University (ACU). Dr. Taylor chose to name the new center after Carl Spain, a legendary figure at ACU whose prophetic voice was a catalyst for change on the campus in the mid 1900’s.
